Romney’s men have engaged Donald Trump to savage Santorum in Michigan.
At a time when Romney is desperately trying to find ways to Santorum’s right it is a strange choice.
Trump has bankrolled the likes of Chuck Schumer, Harry Reid, Kirsten Gillibrand, John Kerry, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, giving Democrats 60 votes in the Senate—an institution that gave this country Obamacare, an 800 billion dollar stimulus bill that did not work and a tsunami of red ink.
It is the same Donald Trump who has called himself pro-choice, favored gun control, said he liked Nancy Pelosi, advocated higher taxe,s and once praised Obama only to self-immolate at a birther rally this year, driving his negatives into the stratosphere. Oh, and throw in a few “you’re fired” video cuts, the weedwhacker hairdo and excerpts of his Nevada speech that was laden with the f*** word and you have a messenger sure to be embraced by born again Christians.
It is an odd way to appeal to the evangelicals and tea party types now flocking to Santorum.
And therein lies the lesson. When using a surrogate to savage an opponent, make sure you pick one that doesn’t repel the audience. The wrong surrogate will leave people scratching their heads thinking, "WTF?".
