Baptist history, contrary to some modern beliefs, does not trace its origin to the reformation. The key element of Biblical Christianity, and a Baptist distinctive, believers baptism, has been around throughout the history of the church. Those groups which espouse the erroneous (and unscriptural) doctrine of infant baptism have opposed those taking this position as far back as the early centuries after Christ and were even referred to in the writings of the Catholic church as baptists as far back as the 12th century.
