"The New Colossus" Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-w...
  • Posted: Wednesday, May 22, 2013 4:31 pm By Mark StolarskiU.S. Marine Every year at Memorial Day, people thank me for my service in the military. But Memorial Day isn’t for me. Yes, I am a veteran, but Veterans Day, not Memorial Day, is the day for all veterans. I'll write more about Veter...

The supreme function of statesmanship is to provide against preventable evils. In seeking to do so, it encounters obstacles which are deeply rooted in human nature. One is that by the very order of things such evils are not demonstrable until they have occurred: at each stage in their onset...

Second to None: An Evolution on our Right to Bear Arms I signed the waiver. My name in ink meant no turning back. I walked into foreign territory with my goggles and protective ear gear and, amid the loud blasts and shells flying at my feet, I was ready to get my hands on a trigger. Firing a gun f...

With Memorial Day approaching Americans should be preparing to honor our veterans and military heroes currently fighting for us as well as remembering those we have lost. This honor should be especially due from our own government that has sent these brave men and women off to war. Unfortunately, th...

A driver was stuck in a traffic jam on the beltway outside Washington DC.  Nothing had moved for 30 minutes.  Suddenly, a man walks up and taps on his window. The driver rolls it down and asks, "What's going on?" "Terrorists have kidnapped Congress, and they're asking for a $100 million...

Last week I had an Accountant (CPA) come into my office with her husband who happened to be a banker. She had requested the meeting because she needed “a good person to refer her clients to for investment and insurance needs.” What she was really looking for was aneasy way to make m...

It Takes a “Mother & Father” to Undo What the Village Has Done!

  •

For the benefit of my “out of the area” readers, this is my response to an urban story that has become all too familiar.  Newburgh, New York, the Northeastern Mecca of the broken family/welfare state! A young black man, who is chased by police, turns to lunge at them with a knife and his fatally shot as a consequence of his action. Naturally the relatives and community are angry…but their anger and frustration is directed at the police who have since been cleared of wrongdoing.

I wanted to respond to the Lembhard’s family starts vigil story on page 3 of this Tuesday’s (8/14) TH-Record. First of all, I want to extend my deepest most heart-felt sympathies to the Lembhard family. There is no greater pain in this world than the pain of losing a loved one. Period!

Second, I want to commend your proactive and creative response of planning a vigil that encourages community participation by bullet holes. Here is where we part company with my wish for us that is both tough love and my personal guarantee for our way out of the darkness.

With all due respect to Michael’s cousin, it does not “take a whole village to raise a child.”…it takes two loving parents! Period! Beyond that, it takes a village that honors this reality to create a safe environment for this reality to flourish. How blessed are we to have men and women who are willing to put themselves in personal jeopardy by wearing the police uniform for modest pay and the benefit of our communities? Very blessed indeed!

When we learn to take ownership of our own lives and the lives of those we love instead of surrendering that ownership to “the village”, we will find the happiness we so richly deserve…the very same happiness endowed to us by our Creator and enshrined for us by our Founders. Trust me…they knew a thing or two about adversity and challenge! May God bless and ease the suffering of the Lembhard family.

And finally, my message to the State. Your “social experiment” has been a complete and utterly disatrous failure! You take care of the streets and bridges and let us take care of our own families! And to the Politicians…either grow a set and do the right thing, or find another line of work! And to the Clergy…WHERE ARE YOU?

ThoughtsAloud ◄Dave► Interestingly, I was doing the final edits to try to get the paragraphs right on my post above, discussing the relationship between villages and parents, while you were posting this, Chip. ;-) ◄Dave►

Doug Walters I am old enough to remember when the parents and the neighborhood watched out for children. If we done something that was totally out of bounds a Neighbor always new who you were and before you could get home to explain your side of the story, the neighbo...  more

ThoughtsAloud ◄Dave► Agreed, Doug; yet don't discount the value of that village in the halcyon days of our youth. We could head out the door for an adventure on our bicycles, not even sure ourselves where we were going, and our moms wouldn't even ask; they would just admonish...  more

Vincent Ross I agree that the "village" has a role to play. I had the same experience as Dave. We would head out to play and went basically everywhere... the rule was to be home before the streetlights came on. But no matter where we went, we were almost ...  more
