Fox News is out today with a disturbing report that the unmanned drones are susceptible to being hijacked by terrorist organizations and used as weapons. The process is called "spoofing" and it can be performed by anyone at a realitively low cost by sending the drone's GPS unit false information that looks real with a signal stronger than the one coming from the satillites orbiting earth.
With possible upawrds of 30,000 drones flying in US airpace in 5-10 years, this is a very unnerving prosect for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The DHS already has set up programs to try and stop these hijackings from happening however they are poorly funded and not yet focused on spoofing.
Most concerning, is that in the future most drones will not be usuing encrypted military UAV but rather civilian GPS units which are far more susceptable to tampering.
