The Iranian military has just finished conducting military exercises that feature new medium and long-range missiles that could put up to 35 US military bases in their line of fire, the Washington Post reported. These missiles also have the capacity to attack a single target simultaneously, and evade anti-ballistic missiles in the process, the Revolutionary Guard said in a statement.
These new exercises come weeks after the European Union placed an embargo on Iranian oil imports, which accounts for 18% of Iran’s total oil exports, dealing another blow to Iran’s already beleaguered economy. Tehran has stated that these exercises are a response to the “political impoliteness” of the West to put military action on the table in discussions over Iran’s supposedly dangerous nuclear program. Tehran has repeatedly insisted that their nuclear program is just for civilian use, but the IAEA has warned that there is a “military dimension” behind the program, which concerns the West tremendously.
House Speaker John Boehner has called on the Obama administration, to be firmer with Iran over the military exercises, but another report has stated that, while Iran may be increasing its military sophistication, they are still years away from developing a weapon that can reach the US. In fact, it seems that the extent of the military’s range is just Eastern Europe and the Middle East, though that is still a concern for the Pentagon, and for the US troops stationed in that area.
