Chris Matthews aside, most people had a positive reaction to the future First Lady and New Jersey Governor. Ann Romney passionately told the story of a young married couple living frugally and working hard to achieve greatness in America. I felt she connected especially well with working families who have been hit hardest by the Obama economy.
Governor Christie did what he does best – tell the truth. You couldn’t watch his speech without have a moment where you said to yourself, “Man, this guy is great.” He defined a clear future for our party and the conservative values that built our nation. There were too many great one-liners to mention in detail but my personal favorite was when he nailed Democrats for caring about unions and not education. Christie has accomplished amazing things as a Republican Governor in a heavily blue state and should be recognized for his achievements and for expanding our party’s appeal.
I also wanted to give Mia Love an honorable mention. She is going places in our party and gave an electrifying speech which excited crowds when she yelled, “We’re not buying what you’re selling in 2012.” She didn’t just recite the line, she sold it. Everyone in the room was smiling afterward.
The comments by pundits criticizing the speeches for not talking more about Governor Romney are overblown. Christie strongly praised Romney and concluded his speech with an appeal to stand with Mitt. All of our other speakers did the same. Also remember that there are two more days and nights of speeches to cheerlead our nominee. Overall, it was a winner.
