The U.S. government is planning a massive modernization program for America’s 5,113 nuclear warheads. The arsenal upgrade is expected to cost more than $352 billion over the next ten years. It will include modernizing buildings and laboratories as well as the missiles and delivery systems for the nuclear weapons.
Even with the costs, the U.S. nuclear arsenal is the greatest deterrent our nation has in war. The sheer number of nuclear warheads is enough to make any ambitious dictator or reckless government think twice about attacking the U.S. or our allies. Perhaps most threatening is our fleet of Ohio class nuclear submarines that are always circulating around the world and ready to strike any target.
These great weapons are a necessary evil and will continue to play a vital role in the strategic defense of the US for the foreseeable future. The nuclear warhead is the weapon you pray you never have to fire, but it is the most important in maintaining peace and long-term world stability.
