This 1921 essay/obituary of Mary White, written by her father, was required reading when I was in school. It wasn't only for the grammar and writing style, but for the topic as well. It was a unique look at the life of a young girl so many years ago. I'm glad I had the chance to re...

Saturday Night Live finally - after 35 years - has made an intelligent commentary on the elections! This is worth watching - even sitting through the 15 second commercial for.

That would have been a lot funnier if it wasn't for the simple fact that their peers in Ohio and Florida are the ones who will decide who will be the next POTUS. If I were a young man, I'd get the hell out of this doomed country as fast as I could. ◄Dave►

Too bad there are no more undiscovered lands on the earth. A select million or so could try this experiment again. Moon colony anyone?

Of course it would never happen. The Ron Paul wackos (sorry Dave) tried to get a few thousand people to move to New Hampshire a few years ago - and nobody moved! So basically everybody's all talk no action.
Actually I have an Austrian friend who told me that if a person shows up in Austria their whole system is geared to take them in... no matter what. He said within about a year a new arrival can vote. And Austria only has about 5 million people! We could really take them! Even change the official language to English! less

His 'wackos' are mostly kids who reject the Incumbrepublocrat Duopoly, and like the TEA Party Patriots were trying to capture or at least influence the Republican wing. They were no more sucessful than we were at deating the establishment candidate. The difference now is that they are clinging to their principles, while the TEA Party types are once again falling in line to vote for the lesser of two evils.
The Free State project in NH is still growing, although it has been somewhat taken over by the Anarchist wing of libertarianism. I have often thought of joining them; but I don't do snow and prefer redneck culture out here in the Southwest, to that of New England.
Don't believe the spin, Doug. I have lived in several third-world countries, and was far freer there than in America. If one has an education and even a modest American income, one is considered part of the aristicracy in such places. Rent and domestic servants are ridiculously cheap, and the 'authorities' don't hassle the aristocrats and tourists. The police tip their hat and say "Good morning, sir" as they step out of the way on the sidewalk.
We pay a heavy price in America for believing that we are in charge, owe an obligation to respect 'authority,' and a need to get involved in politics to defend our so-called rights and freedom. We enslave ourselves with that illusory mindset. ◄Dave► less

I am trying to think of any third world country that at present doesn't have a Muslim problem developing. I guess there are some, but this is our country and I am going to fight for it for all I am worth. Point well taken, though.

It was said to be very affordable on a small American income, and very American friendly to both retirees and business to cater to those retirees. That was twenty years ago. From what I understand now is that many "rich Americans" have migrated there in retirement and pretty much driven the prices up on everything and pretty much created a segregated society where there is now the American neighborhoods and the locals who's wages haven't kept up with the inflated prices. They aren't as friendly to their "rich immigrants" as they used to be. less

Jonathan, Austria and Canada are just too darn cold. I'm getting old. Sunshine and warm breezes are the order of the day. Aside for having a more stable economy Canada is in worse shape than the US politically. More work to do there than here.

The three flag theory makes a lot of sense to me. As I said, if I were younger, I'd be there.
